CHAPTER TEN
GABBY HADN’T DRESSED up since before she got pregnant, other than her wedding dress, and that didn’t seem like an appropriate choice for a Christmas party. But she did have a black dress with a high waistline and a fuller skirt that fit again. Her body had changed after having the babies; her waist was thicker and she’d grown rounder in all the other places, too. It was like getting to know herself all over again as she looked in the mirror. She used to be slim, but now she’d become downright curvy. Not only did her figure look different, but a sparkle of gold shone on her left ring finger as well, and as she looked in the full-length mirror on the back of Seth’s bedroom door, that was where her gaze was drawn.
“I look married...” she murmured.
The door creaked open and Seth poked his head in. “You ready?” His gaze landed on her and he froze for a moment. “Wow. You look great, Gabs.”
“I look...different,” she qualified, and she pulled her lipstick out of a pocket in the skirt and put some on.
“You look beautiful,” he said, and when she looked over at him, his expression was completely serious.
It felt good to hear it coming from him. Funny how childbirth could both give her new amazement in her body’s ability to bring life into the world, and at the same time leave her feeling like a visitor in her own skin. She didn’t know how to dress her figure to her best advantage anymore, and she felt like she hardly recognized herself.
“You ready to leave?” he asked.
“Do we have any last diapers to change?”
“I hope not.” Seth smiled wanly. “I’ve got the boys all downstairs.”
He was getting more comfortable with the babies, and she’d been surprised to see how quickly he’d adjusted to diapers and packing the babies around the last couple days.
“You’re getting good at this,” she said.
“I’m trying real hard.” He grinned and stepped back to let her through the door.
“I guess we’re ready, then.” She felt a little tickle of nerves as she said it. “Let me just grab the diaper bag.”
She was meeting the Straight family tonight in a totally new way. She knew a lot of them already from her years of friendship with Seth, but tonight she’d be introduced as his new wife. This was the kind of thing she’d wanted for years...a husband of her own.
But Seth’s family knew him better than anyone... Would they see through this sham, or would they buy it? Because if they didn’t, the rumors would fly around Eagle’s Rest and her boys wouldn’t have that protection from the gossip she’d been so desperate to provide. And when rumors started, they didn’t stop. But it wasn’t only about the personal impact of rumors; it could affect her husband’s employment, as well. Suspicion of insurance fraud was nothing to toy with.
